ECC Announcements: Ribbon Cuttings, Trail Events & City Council Update
Hello neighbors,
Big things are blooming this May across the East Cesar Chavez and Holly neighborhoods, and I thought that I’d share some updates on ribbon cutting ceremonies, new crosswalks, community art, and ways to get involved in shaping our public spaces. Hope to see many of you out at one of these events!

New Crosswalks for a Safer ECC
🚸 Crosswalk Ribbon Cutting on East Cesar Chavez at Lynn Street
Friday, May 3 | 9:00–9:45 AM
1917 E Cesar Chavez (Freewheelin Coffee Truck)
Please join Council Member Velasquez, Director of Transportation Richard Mendoza, APD, and neighbors for a short ceremony celebrating the installation of a new pedestrian crosswalk near Lynn Street. This improvement was made possible through sustained community advocacy and partnership with Transportation & Public Works. The new crossing enhances safety along one of our most trafficked corridors and brings us one step closer to a more walkable, people-centered ECC Street.

New Crosswalk at 2nd & Medina Streets
Thanks to a direct request from Christ Church and community collaboration, the City recently installed a new pedestrian walkway at the corner of Medina and 2nd St—another great addition and win for improving neighborhood safety.

May 6 City Council Work Session on Cap & Stitch: Fund the Caps (& Stitches!)🚨
City Council will hold a Work Session on Monday, May 6 to discuss funding for I-35 Cap & Stitch improvements. Staff currently recommends only funding caps at Cesar Chavez–4th and 11th–12th, and argues against caps further north and eliminating the “stitches” at Holly Street and ECC. Several council members plan to push back on this narrow approach, but up to three acres of highway coverage are very much at stake for our neighborhood.
