Austin City Council Passes HOME Code Amendments – Phase 1 | AustinTexas.gov

On Thursday, December 7, the Austin City Council passed new code amendments for the first phase of the “Home Options for Middle-Income Empowerment” (HOME) Initiative.”

Help Design Austin's New Light Rail System

The Austin Transit Partnership is in the process of designing Austin's new light rail system: "Be a part of our design process that puts people first. We want to see the city from your perspective. Whether you live, work, or play in Austin, or simply care about the city, tell us about your expectations for mobility today and tomorrow. Share your desired experiences so we can design a system that enhances your neighborhoods while meeting your needs."

Crime & Safety Update

Background: On October 16, one of our ECC neighbors facilitated and hosted a meeting with Council Member Jose Valasquez and Charles Loosen, Austin Public Health, to discuss concerns with unpoliced criminal activity and unsafe conditions caused by hundreds of individuals that migrate into the ECC neighborhood for services at the Austin Baptist Chapel Angel House Soup Kitchen. See additional details in October’s announcements.

On November 7, there was an introductory meeting with Austin Police Department leadership and Austin Public Health staff responsible for various aspects of homelessness response and public space management in our community. We also requested APD provide directed patrols to address drug dealing and other criminal behavior.

Update: 

  • Angel House does not feel that shifting its service to a mobile food distribution model is viable.

  • Austin Public Health staff will request that Mobile Loaves and Fishes distribute their meals elsewhere – they frequent the ECC neighborhood and Terrazas Library parking lot.

  • City Staff is in the early stages of planning for a sustained operation around IH-35 between E. Cesar Chavez & 8th streets. We will provide additional details as they become available.

Hybrid Parking Initiative Update

Background: The ECC Team is working with the City to develop a “hybrid” parking zone to help alleviate parking challenges for several blocks of the ECC neighborhood. For more details on the initiative, please see the presentation here.

Update: We don’t have any substantive updates yet, but I’ll share them when we do!
